Wind, solar make up 68% of new EU power in 2011

Sixty eight percent of the European Union’s new power installations in 2011 came from wind and solar projects.

Solar PV was the leader in new power installations in 2011, accounting for 21 GW (46.7%) of new power capacity, as you can see above, but I haven’t seen much detail on that yet, as all the info I have is from EWEA.

Wind

With 9,616 MW of new wind power installed in 2011, the EU now has 94 GW of wind power capacity installed, 11% more than in 2010. In total, wind power accounted for over one-fifth (21.4%) of new power installations in the EU in 2011.

A solar field containing 3,575 solar panels expected to produce 1,500 megawatt-hours each year for a co-op sprung up this week in Rifle, Colorado.

Denmark to make biomass primary energy source

Denmark’s five largest cities are planning to make the switch from coal to biomass.

John Nordbo, climate and environment manager for the World Wildlife Fund, said in a recent interview with Danish media that the plan, which would reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 20,000 to 30,000 tons, was a very encouraging and promising initiative.

PV panels integrated with roofing material

Companies such as Dow Chemicals, California’s Custom Bolt Metals and Pennsylvania’s CertainTeed are integrating thin-film solar laminates with roofing shingles and metal roofing.

Another development is The Dow Chemical Co.’s announcement of the POWERHOUSE Solar Shingle. The Midland, Mich.–based company says the system integrates low-cost, thin-film PVC cells into a proprietary roofing shingle that can be interwoven into standard asphalt roofing. It’s slated for limited availability by mid-2010 and wider availability in 2011.

22% of world’s energy could be solar by 2050

The International Energy Agency announced that 22% of the world’s energy could come from solar power by the year 2050.

Between them, the IEA says CSP and PV can provide 2.3 percent of the world’s power by 2020, rising to 8.8 percent in 2030, when grid parity kicks in.

By 2050, PV and CSP can each provide 11 percent of global electricity, the IEA added.

World’s first biofuel-capable helicopter developed in Australia

Queensland’s Delta Helicopters has developed the Delta D2, a biodiesel-capable helicopter designed for use in remote farms in Australia.

It is expected that the Delta D2 will be made available in self-assemble kit form, designed for use by farmers on Australia’s remote farms, who already have diesel on hand for their trucks, tractors and farm machinery. The engine is coming from the US firm DeltaHawk. They’ve been working on diesel aviation engine that they claim burns 40% less fuel standard gasoline aviation engines and 75% less than turbine aviation engines. Plus they reckon they can get 30-40% more range per gallon. What’s more, a DeltaHawk diesel aviation engine is said to be capable of using biofuels.

McDonald’s logo becomes green in Europe

McDonald’s franchises in Europe will change its logo’s red background to green in an attempt to promote a more eco-friendly image.

About 100 German McDonald’s restaurants will make the change by the end of 2009, the company said in a statement Monday. Some franchises in Great Britain and France have already started using the new color scheme behind their Golden Arches.

California to require 30% in renewables by 2020

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed an executive order requiring that 30% of the state’s power needs be generated by renewable energy by 2020.

The executive order explicitly states that renewable energy from “resources and facilities located throughout the Western Interconnection” is welcome. The Western Interconnection is the power grid that spans the West.

Nokia working on battery-less cell phones

Nokia is developing a prototype cell phone that is charged by ambient radio waves.

A prototype radio wave-powered cell phone in development at the Nokia Research Center in Cambridge, U.K. will be able to harvest 50 milliwatts of power (enough to recharge a turned-off phone), and current prototypes can harvest 3 to 5 milliwatts. Nokia’s device works much like radio frequency RFID tags that convert electromagnetic waves into radio signals. It’s a system that requires a wideband receiver to harvest as many different frequencies (between 500 megahertz and 10 gigahertz) as possible.

Renewable energy conference a success

The sixth annual Renewable Energy World North America conference exceeded expectations when it was held in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 10-12.

With more than 225 companies exhibiting, both the exhibit and attendance numbers reflected significant increases over a year ago. Next year’s numbers are again expected to increase. A total of over 5,000 attendees and 300 exhibitors are expected at the Renewable Energy World North America conference and expo in Austin, Texas, February 23-25, 2010.
