Satellites in geosynchronous orbits could gather solar energy and electromagnetically beam it to receivers on earth that would convert the solar power into electricity. The technology exists, but there are still a number of obstacles before this concept can become reality.
“A single kilometer-wide band of geosynchronous Earth orbit experiences enough solar flux in one year to nearly equal the amount of energy contained within all known recoverable conventional oil reserves on Earth today,” the report said.
