Persian Gulf states push research in renewables

Countries like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia are funding research into renewable energy technologies.

They are aggressively pouring billions of dollars made in the oil fields into new green technologies. They are establishing billion-dollar clean-technology investment funds. And they are putting millions of dollars behind research projects at universities from California to Boston to London, and setting up green research parks at home.

University of Iowa’s Engineering Department to offer wind engineering courses

Starting with the spring 2008 semester, the University of Iowa’s mechanical and industrial engineering department will start offering undergraduate and graduate courses in the design of wind turbines and wind power management.

The Wind Power Management Program at the UI is intended to educate professionals for design, operations and management of wind farms deployed in massive numbers all over the country,” Kusiak, professor of industrial engineering, says. “The graduates will be able to fully understand the system and management of wind power facilities and their interactions with other alternative and conventional power generation systems.
