Solar power installer jobs in the United Kingdom have increased 75% this year because government incentives have increased the demand for photovoltaic panels.
The combined number of employees for Solar Century, which builds solar systems for homebuilders Persimmon Plc and Barratt Developments Plc, and 11 companies it works with to install panels has risen to 350 from 200 at the beginning of the year, the London-based company said today in an e-mailed statement. There will be “well over 500 jobs by 2011,” it said.
“The vast bulk of the solar PV employment created in the regions is in skilled and semi skilled roofing and electrical jobs,” the company said.

Operation Reach, Inc. is seeking funding to provide biodiesel training to local low-income youth in the New Orleans area.
According to Hamilton Simons-Jones, Operation Reach’s chief development officer, the GYBP is now in its second year. “We originally formed this project about a year and half go to accomplish two things,” he said. “One is to be a small, biodiesel social enterprise that converts used cooking oil into biodiesel fuel as a …local/regional business run by the nonprofit. The second is to develop green job training…and [expose local] youth to biodiesel…and really use that [experience] as an introduction not only to overall environmental awareness, but also more concrete job training.”

The ethanol industry in Minnesota pumped $2.5 billion into the state’s economy and supported more than 6800 jobs.
The annual report from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture says ethanol production in the state increased to 862 million gallons in 2009 from 550 million gallons five years ago.
It estimates production will increase to 1.1 billion gallons this year with an economic impact of $3.1 billion and around 1,500 additional jobs.

A study by the European Commission has shown that biomass generates the most jobs in the renewable energy sector.
The report found that more than 60 percent of total RES sector employment generation is to due to biomass technologies. The major share of employment is triggered by the supply of biomass for fuel use. The study points out, however, that the share attributed to biomass is subject to uncertainty because significant amounts of biomass for non-grid use do not appear to be purchased at market prices, rather they are obtained from the producers own resources or informal channels. Therefore, it is assumed that 50 percent of biomass obtained by private households is purchased at market prices.

As the unemployment rate rises across the country, enrollment in green job training in community colleges is on the increase.
In Michigan, which has the nation’s highest unemployment rate at 12 percent, Lansing Community College has seen enrollment in its alternative energy degree program grow from 42 students in 2005 to 252 students in 2008. This fall, the college will begin offering certificates for solar, geothermal, wind turbine and energy efficiency technicians.
Most new students are middle-aged men who recently lost jobs in the auto industry, which makes them eligible for a state program that provides $10,000 to unemployed workers for training.

With the continuing recession and President Obama’s plan to promote alternative energy, community colleges are seeing increased enrollment in “green-collar” job training.
To meet growing demand, two-year colleges are launching or expanding green job training with money from the federal stimulus package.
Students and schools are betting that President Barack Obama’s campaign to promote alternative energy and curb global warming will create millions of well-paying green jobs that do not require a four-year degree.

The wind power industry had a 30% annual growth rate in 2008, and the Global Wind Energy Council projects that one million people will be employed in the industry by the end of the decade.
It has been another record year for the industry. People say these growth rates can’t go on forever, but they keep on going on,” said Steve Sawyer, secretary general of the Global Wind Energy Council. There had been “dramatic” increases in the US and China, with the former overtaking Germany as the country with the most installed capacity, he told the World Future Energy Summit.

Even with increasing unemployment, the green sector is going strong.
No one knows precisely how many green jobs exist in the U.S. economy. Estimates range from less than 1 million workers to nearly four times that number. What’s clear is clean industries have been growing rapidly without a lot of help from Uncle Sam. Worldwide, investors poured a record $117.2 billion into alternative energy in 2007, according to the London-based research firm New Energy Finance. Costs of wind and solar power are dropping fast.

Between 2006 and 2007, installed solar systems increased by 45%. There are currently between 25,000 and 35,000 solar power worker, and this number is expected to increase to 110,000 by 2016.
Solar workers install thermal collectors, which convert the sun’s rays into heat used to supply buildings with hot water, for heating and cooling systems and to warm swimming pools. They also install solar panels to convert the sun’s rays into electricity that can power things like appliances and lights. When more electricity is being produced than the customer is using, the excess can be stored in batteries for use at other times. When batteries are full, the surplus electricity can be exported back to the electrical grid if the building is connected to it, offsetting electricity costs from the utility company.

The United Nations released a report saying 20 million jobs will be created worldwide by 2030 from the development of alternative energy sources.
Manufacturing, installing, and maintaining solar panels should add 6.3 million jobs by 2030 while wind power should add more than 2 million jobs. Even more jobs could be created in the building, recycling, clean vehicle manufacturing sectors, the report said.
